Versailles was not born as a great palace, but as a quiet place in the middle of nature, appreciated by the French kings for its forests and hunting. In 1623, King Louis XIII had a small, simple and functional pavilion built here, far from the hustle and bustle of Paris.

The history of the Palace of Versailles begins in the 17th century as a simple hunting lodge ordered to be built by Louis XIII in a setting of woods and wetlands, on the outskirts of Paris. It was a discreet place, designed for relaxation and hunting, far removed from the monumental image we associate with Versailles.

From 1661 onwards, he promoted gigantic expansions, surrounding himself with the best architects, artists and landscape designers. But Versailles was not just luxury: it was a strategy. By moving the court there, Louis XIV concentrated the nobility around him, controlling their daily life between ceremonies, parties and strict etiquette. Versailles thus became a stage where everything – art, architecture and protocol – conveyed the same message: the king’s power was absolute.
